Wanderings at the Brasswood Inn in P-Town!
Rooted in experimentation and a fondness for early music, percussionist Katalin La Favre and soprano Naomi Columna have arranged a set of Medieval and early Renaissance music for modern percussion and voice. Looking at these works with contemporary eyes, the artists infuse this repertoire with unique timbres such as the marimba, drums, bells, and different nuances in the voice. Weaving together different musical eras, you will also hear bursts of operatic drama, minimalist trances, among other unexpected sound worlds. The playfulness with time is also represented by the division of the program into 4 seasons, signaled by the sounds of bells as well as 4 different versions of Guillaume de Machaut’s Puis qu’en oubli.
Mud Window Mud Mirror in Residency at Avaloch Farm Institute
In 2021 I moved back to the United States from France where I had been living for 9 years. Shortly after my relocation, I began to take a ceramics class, in a venture to create clay based musical instruments. To my surprise, this class became more than simply a means to an end. It was in many ways a mental refuge from the sense of great uncertainty I was feeling during this drastic life change. Time seems to stop completely in the ceramic studio. Hours go by in the blink of an eye where you are completely engrossed in your work.
Clay has an incredible calming quality in its various stages; the malleable tactile nature of soft clay, flowing water as you wash bisque, gently brushing on glaze.... As an impatient person by nature, clay has also been a great teacher of patience; waiting for the clay to dry properly before moving onto the next stage, waiting for it to unveil itself out of the kiln...
In an intersection between theatre and music, this Mud Meditation project features the first ceramic instruments I have made in this great experiment, including tongue drums, a keyboard, and an udu, but perhaps more importantly, is an ode to this weekly ritual of ceramic class.
During this residency, I’m very excited to be working with Naomi Columna, who will be creating video to integrate into the show.

World Premier: Medieval Marimba
In this program, singer Naomi Columna and percussionist Katalin La Favre explore vocal works from the Medieval and Renaissance period navigating through the various colors of an instrument that was not yet in existence in Western culture, the marimba. The marimba takes on different musical roles, at times accompanying Columna’s nuanced voice with what was originally the gentle plucking of lute accompaniment, and at other moments, taking on the role of the voice in medieval duets harmonizing with Columna. Extended techniques, such as bowing the bars and adding preparations to the marimba explore unique sonic possibilities in this repertoire rarely heard on the instrument. Columna and La Favre look upon these early music masterpieces with contemporary eyes, performing works by composers such as John Dowland, Claudin de Sermisy, Alfonso Ferrabosco and Guillaume de Machaut.
