Whimsical Windchime
Another ceramic instrument I thought would be fun to make was a wind chime, partially to have a sound that was a bit more ambient, but also to be able to have more fun visually with the clay. According to my research, glazing ceramic instruments is always tricky, so some prefer to leave them unglazed. I figured that with the wind chime I could have some fun with glaze to give the set of instruments a bit of color, and also play with the different shapes that the top of the wind chime could be.
Here is a photo of the first wind chime I made. This is the top part of the wind chime, meant to be the main body for suspending the little chimes. I coiled the clay into a sort of cone shape, and then experimented with distorting this shape to make it look a bit more funky. I then glazed the top part with 4 coats of ‘green tea.’ The bottom part is ‘lido’ (2 coats) and maycoshino (2 coats).
On the bottom, I put a coil that I made into a spiral which the chimes will be suspended from.
